A ranching family in Montana confronts others encroaching on their land. Forrie J. Smith, who plays Lloyd, is a seasoned individual in the rodeo world. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget”; he has a Montana accent and goes back to the Southern California accent he normally uses. With WatchMojo: The 10 Best Off-The-Radar Summer TV Shows (2018). (Review is for the first two seasons only) I didn’t expect to like this series, but the story, acting, and camera work are excellent. It’s basically Montana Mafia Wars with a massive testosterone boost (cowboys with guns on horses fishing)! Lead actor Costner stars in “The Duttons.” The show is at its best when it shows how the chessboard moves the Duttons and how their enemies get involved. The show falls off early in the second season but picks up again midway through the second season. Kelsey Asbille is the weakest link in the role of Monica and she performs poorly, the story is choppy and the acting is just off the mark. I think Cole Hauser (along with Costner himself) might be the strongest actor in the role of Rip and I’m looking forward to the other scenes that Rip was in as well. Thomas Rainwater is great too. The story is gripping and the scenery is beautiful. Just like Cormac McCarthy’s All The Pretty Horses was a bit rougher and more brutal than the title suggests, this show strikes me in a similar vein. I highly recommend it and wish I hadn’t waited so long to watch it.
