A horror web series crew travels to an abandoned asylum for a live broadcast. They soon encounter much more than they bargained for as they move deeper into the nightmarish old building. The filmmakers couldn’t get permission from the South Korean government to film in the actual hospital, so the scenes set in Gonjiam were actually filmed at the National Maritime High School in Busan, with the production team adhering closely to the hospital’s layout to recreate the exact same exterior and hallways. Charlotte keeps glancing sideways as the group stands in front of the hospital. She obviously responds while smiling at whoever it is. References Return to House on Haunted Hill (2007). I normally criticize found footage horror because it’s usually pointless and doesn’t add anything to the story. Found footage films would usually do better than a “regular” film; film. This is not the case for Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum. With a new cutting edge technology and a reason why the actors know how to work a camera, it serves the purpose of this film excellently. There are few shaky cameras and other “effects”; that you would usually see in found footage, which in my opinion ruins the film. The story itself is pretty standard, 7 young “ghost hunters”. enter an old insane asylum, mainly for views and profit, which makes it more realistic than other similar films. The pace of the film is quite slow and nothing happens in the first half, but it is worth it, initially I wanted to give it a 6, but considering that this is a horror film and one of the scariest in its sub-genre! I have ever seen, I raised it to a 7. If you want a scary film without too much plot, this is the film for you.
